In her commissions, Sara Garden Armstrong uses space in a dynamic way as she continues her exploration of organic transformation, movement, and form in site-specific sculpture.
The mesmerizing works reflect Armstrong’s involvement with physiological and scientific phenomena as they play out in the human body. Before translating these ideas into a full size sculpture, Armstrong first builds a scale model that accurately depicts her visualization of the concepts.

Breath and Shadow combines and juxtaposes artwork from different periods to form a new multimedia installation of shifting meanings. Breath, shadow, light, sound, and the curve are layered with each venue a unique exhibition responding to the given space.
The sculpture is an abstraction of the central nervous system (CNS), an exploration and translation of scientific information into art. Within translucent abaca forms, moving lights suggest the linear rhythms of nerve impulses. When the light stops, it represents what happens in multiple sclerosis (MS) when the myelin and nerve are damaged.
The sculpture is based on the bronchi and morphed into sectional forms that breathe rhythmically via feeder air hoses simulating the trachea. The outer skin colors suggest the diversity and unity we share as humans.
